Slides + Chicken coop Chickens must be among mankind's greatest friends in nature. This jungle bird from the Indian peninsula gives us eggs, meat, fertilizer and feathers, and in return it eats weeds and leftovers. In a permaculture project, having chickens is a no-brainer unless you're vegan. Step one: Building coop. Must be relatively fox-proof. 07/06/2015 permacultura
Slides + Composting area The bin to the left is for worm compost and is very nearly full. The pile in the middle is for cuttings and chicken manure. To the right, a pile of compost from previous years.

There should be walls around the new heap in the middle, but they can be made "as you go". A height of ~1.5 meters will give a good combustion process. 07/06/2015 permaculturaBaobáxia
Slides + Hügelkultur - raised beds on wood In Hügelkultur, you build a raised bed on top of a pile of dead wood.

The advantage is that nutrition is readily available and that the wood will suck up rain water like a sponge. This means that the beds will need much less irrigation. 03/05/2015 hügelkulturpermacultura

Slides + Raised beds In permaculture, you normally don't like to grow annual vegetables. The reason is that you have to supply nutrition to be able to grow on the same land year after year. With perennials, you can design a biosphere in three layers (canopy trees, shrubs and ground cover) which feed each other by fixing nitrogen from the air, minerals from deep in the ground, etc.

Carrots, potatoes, lettuce, onions and garlic are quite nice things to eat, though. So if you do grow annuals after all, you do it in raised beds, That way, the soil can be kept very loose, and it's easy to supply enough nutrients by composting weeds and nutrient-fixing plants like clover or alfalfa. These raised beds will supply peas, spinach, onions, garlic, lettuce, carrots and potatoes. Or so I hope. 04/04/2015 permacultura
